Overview
The inland wetlands of the Batticaloa region — the network of small reservoirs, paddy irrigation channels, and seasonal floodplain habitats that characterise the Batticaloa District interior — form a rich and largely unexplored birdwatching landscape. These wetlands, maintained by the ancient irrigation culture of the Eastern Province, attract large numbers of waterbirds in the post-monsoon season and support a permanent community of resident species throughout the year. The landscape of the Batticaloa interior — flat, fertile, and criss-crossed by the irrigation channels of a working agricultural system — is beautiful in the morning light when the water surfaces catch the sun and the birds are most active.
