Overview

Lahugala Kitulana National Park is a small but exceptionally productive wildlife sanctuary in the Ampara District, centred around the Lahugala Lake whose shallow margins provide the feeding ground for one of the most reliable elephant-viewing spectacles in Sri Lanka. The lake’s beru grass — a water plant that elephants particularly favour — grows in the shallow margins and attracts herds to feed in the late afternoon, creating one of the most accessible and reliably predictable wild elephant experiences in the country. The park is compact enough to be fully visited in a half-day, making it an ideal addition to an Arugam Bay itinerary. Painted storks, pelicans, and large waterbird populations complement the elephant experience at the lake.
