Overview
The birdwatching zones within Kumana National Park — centred on the Kumana Villu tidal inlet and the associated mangrove and lagoon habitats — constitute one of the finest avian habitats in South Asia. The park’s bird list exceeds 200 species, and the nesting colony at Kumana Villu (May–July) represents one of the most extraordinary waterbird spectacles in the Indian Ocean region — tens of thousands of painted storks, open-billed storks, night herons, little cormorants, and spoonbills nesting simultaneously in the trees above the inlet water. Resident herons, egrets, and kingfishers are present year-round, and migratory waders from Eurasia add significantly to the diversity in the October–March season. The park’s low visitor numbers make every birding encounter here feel personal and unrushed.
