Overview
Minneriya National Park is home to one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on earth — the annual Elephant Gathering, when hundreds of wild Asian elephants congregate on the plains around the receding Minneriya Tank between August and October each year, drawn by the fresh grass that is exposed as the water level drops. The gathering can involve 150–400 individual elephants at peak — entire herds, bulls, cows, calves, and juveniles interacting in one vast assembly that is simultaneously a feeding event, a social occasion, and a spectacular demonstration of the extraordinary elephant population that the North Central Province dry zone supports. Minneriya covers 8,890 hectares of forest and scrub around the ancient Minneriya Tank, and the tank plains section is the stage for the gathering. Jeep safaris enter the park from the southern gate near Habarana, and the gathering season typically runs from August to October.
