Overview

Kumana National Park — historically called Yala East — occupies 35,664 hectares of southeastern coastal wilderness between Arugam Bay and the Yala complex, internationally recognised as one of Asia’s most important waterbird nesting sites. The Kumana Villu — a tidal inlet lagoon within the park — supports a nesting colony of tens of thousands of waterbirds including painted storks, open-billed storks, night herons, and spoonbills during the May–July nesting season, creating one of the most spectacular ornithological spectacles in South Asia. Beyond the nesting colony, the park supports leopards, elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and a full range of dry zone mammals. The park receives far fewer visitors than Yala Block 1, making every wildlife encounter feel genuinely personal.
