Ohiya Forest Trails

Overview

Ohiya is a small highland settlement near the southern approaches to Horton Plains, and the forest trails in the surrounding area pass through some of the finest and most accessible cloud forest in the Uva Province. The forest at Ohiya is a transition zone between the highland grassland of the Horton Plains plateau and the descending montane forest of the Haputale escarpment — a zone of exceptional biodiversity where the cloud forest drips with moisture, mosses cover every surface, and endemic Sri Lankan birds are present in good numbers. The trails are informal but accessible, and the forest has an atmosphere of deep natural health — the sound of water, the quality of the light through the cloud canopy, and the presence of endemic wildlife create an experience of natural immersion of high quality.

Highlights

  • Cloud forest on the southern approach to Horton Plains
  • Exceptional endemic birdwatching — Sri Lanka whistling thrush and more
  • Moss-draped forest with a deep, damp atmosphere
  • Informal trails through genuinely wild highland forest
  • Very few visitors — the forest is in an essentially natural state
  • The approach to Horton Plains plateau through Ohiya is dramatic
