Overview
Lankarama Stupa is one of the more evocative and atmospherically positioned stupas in the Anuradhapura area — a smaller, partially restored dagoba set among the ruins of a circular vatadage enclosure whose tall stone pillar stumps still stand in a wide circle around the dome, creating a forest of ancient pillars that frames the stupa in a dramatically ruined composition. Built in the 1st century BCE by King Vattagamani Abhaya, the stupa was originally enclosed by multiple rings of stone pillars supporting a roof — a vatadage design considerably grander than the surviving structure suggests. The surrounding area is quieter and less visited than the central Sacred City precincts, giving Lankarama a solitude and atmosphere of genuine antiquity. The broken pillar stumps, the moss-covered base platform, and the restored white dome in the green landscape combine to create one of the Sacred City’s most photogenic compositions.
