Topa Wewa Reservoir

Overview

Topa Wewa is the ancient reservoir immediately adjacent to the Polonnaruwa archaeological complex — a tank of approximately 500 hectares that provided the water supply for the ancient city and is now one of the most pleasant natural amenities of the modern Polonnaruwa visit. The reservoir margins, accessible from roads along the bund, provide excellent birdwatching opportunities and a pleasant early morning walk with views across the still water toward the surrounding dry zone forest. The bund also provides the approach road for visitors cycling the site, and the combination of ancient monuments visible through the trees to the east and the open water to the west creates a uniquely complete landscape experience.
