Mannar–Kalpitiya Dolphin Migration Corridor

June 14, 2026 claymatics.web@gmail.com West Coast Southwest

Overview

The offshore waters between Kalpitiya and Mannar form a dolphin migration corridor of extraordinary productivity — a section of the Indian Ocean where the combination of deep-water upwelling, productive seagrass beds, and the geographic funnel between the Gulf of Mannar and the open Indian Ocean concentrates dolphin populations at certain seasons. Spinner dolphin pods of hundreds and occasionally thousands move through this corridor, and the waters also support bottlenose dolphins and periodically larger species. The migration corridor is best experienced by boat from either the Kalpitiya or Mannar side, and the encounter with a mega-pod in the open ocean — the dolphins leaping and spinning in their hundreds — is one of the most extraordinary marine wildlife experiences in the region.
