Overview
The inland lagoon boat routes of the southwest coast — connecting the Bolgoda Lake, Maduganga, Rathgama Lagoon, and the various smaller lagoon systems through the coastal lowland canal network — provide an alternative coastal journey completely separate from the main highway. These inland water routes, used by local boat operators and increasingly discovered by adventurous travellers, pass through a sequence of different wetland environments: the broad open lake, the narrow mangrove channel, the paddy-fringed lagoon, and the tidal estuary. The Hamilton Canal and its southern extensions create a navigable network for flat-bottomed boats through this remarkable wetland landscape.
