Naga Pokuna (Serpent Pond)

Overview

Naga Pokuna — the Serpent Pond — is an ancient rock-cut pool in the forest of Mihintale, carved from a natural rock formation and decorated with a relief carving of a five-headed cobra (naga) that gives the pool its name. The pool was used for ritual bathing by the monks of the Mihintale monastery complex — a natural cistern fed by rainwater, carved and decorated to reflect the sacred significance of water in Buddhist and Hindu-Buddhist cosmology. The cobra carving is well-preserved and the quality of the carving — the spreading hood, the textured scales, the five heads in a fan — is sophisticated and expressive. The pool is set in a shaded forest hollow away from the main steps system, and visiting it requires a short detour through the forest that adds a dimension of natural discovery to the primarily architectural Mihintale experience.
