Overview
Mihintale is the most historically sacred mountain in Sri Lanka — the granite hill where, in 247 BCE, the monk Mahinda (son of Emperor Ashoka) first met King Devanampiya Tissa during a deer hunt and converted the king and ultimately the entire island to Buddhism. This single encounter changed the course of Sri Lankan civilisation irrevocably, making Mihintale the spiritual birthplace of Sri Lankan Buddhist culture. The sacred mountain complex comprises several summits connected by 1,843 ancient stone steps, at various levels containing the Ambasthala Dagoba (marking Mahinda’s first encounter with the king), the Maha Seya stupa at the highest summit, the Aradhana Gala meditation rock, the Kantaka Chetiya, the Naga Pokuna, and extensive monastic ruins. The full Mihintale experience — climbing the ancient steps at dawn, visiting each sacred site in sequence, and reaching the summit as the light fills the North Central Province — is one of the most profound in all of Sri Lanka.
