Overview
Dondra Lighthouse stands at the southernmost point of Sri Lanka — and the southernmost point of the entire South Asian subcontinent — marking the end of the island’s land mass with the tallest lighthouse in Sri Lanka at approximately 49 metres. Built by the British in 1889, the lighthouse is an imposing cylindrical brick tower painted in a black-and-white band pattern, standing at the tip of a low rocky promontory above the churning Indian Ocean. The southernmost point of Sri Lanka is a place of considerable symbolic power — standing at the lighthouse with the open ocean stretching to Antarctica to the south and the island rising behind, you feel the full weight of geography. The lighthouse is an active navigational aid and is not open to the public for interior access, but the surrounding headland provides excellent coastal views and dramatic ocean photography.
