Overview
Nagadeepa is a small island in the Jaffna Lagoon approximately 25 kilometres north of Jaffna town, home to one of the most sacred Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka — the Nagadeepa Vihara, which the Buddhist tradition holds was visited by the Buddha himself on his second visit to Sri Lanka, predating even the Anuradhapura missions. The temple’s main shrine is built around a jewel throne that the Naga king Maniakkhika is said to have donated for the Buddha’s visit. This association makes Nagadeepa one of the sixteen sacred sites (solosmasthana) of Buddhist pilgrimage in Sri Lanka, drawing devout pilgrims from across the country and the global Buddhist community. The island is accessible only by boat from Kurikadduvan jetty near Punkudutivu, and the boat journey across the flat lagoon provides a beautifully atmospheric approach to the sacred site.
