Overview
Delft Island — known in Sinhala and Tamil as Neduntheevu — is the most remote and atmospheric of the Jaffna island group, a flat, wind-scoured island approximately 35 kilometres northwest of Jaffna that combines Dutch colonial ruins, a wild population of indigenous horses descended from stock abandoned by the Dutch, ancient baobab trees, and ancient Buddhist and Hindu ruins in a landscape of extraordinary barren beauty. The island takes its Dutch name from the period of VOC occupation, and the ruins of the Dutch fort, the Dutch colonial built environment, and the ancient pillar coral walls are all still visible in the flat, treeless landscape. The wild horses of Delft — roaming free across the island as they have for centuries — are perhaps the most unexpected and memorable wildlife encounter available anywhere in Sri Lanka.
