Overview

Nallur Kandaswamy Temple is the most important and most spiritually charged Hindu temple in Sri Lanka — a massive, ancient complex dedicated to the god Murugan (Skanda/Kataragama) in the heart of the Jaffna Peninsula, whose gopuram (entrance tower) rises above the flat northern landscape as a beacon of Tamil Hindu civilisation’s extraordinary depth in northern Sri Lanka. The temple traces its origins to at least the 10th century CE and has been rebuilt multiple times following Portuguese and Dutch colonial destruction. The current temple is a towering example of Dravidian temple architecture — its gopuram blazing with painted stucco sculptures of deities, mythological figures, and decorative bands stacked in multiple levels. During the annual Nallur festival (July–August), the temple becomes the centre of one of the most spectacular and spiritually intense religious festivals in South Asia, drawing hundreds of thousands of pilgrims, kavadi dancers, decorated chariots, and devotees from Sri Lanka and the global Tamil diaspora.
