Overview
Parayanalankulam is an ancient tank system in the Vavuniya District that forms part of the cascade irrigation network of the ancient hydraulic civilisation — tanks connected in sequence so that overflow from one fills the next, creating a sophisticated distributed water management system. The tank and its connected smaller tanks provide productive birdwatching habitat and the agricultural landscape around them is typical of the dry zone farming communities of the northern interior. The restoration of these tanks post-conflict has been part of the agricultural recovery of the Vavuniya District.
