Overview

Talaimannar Pier is the ruined remains of the ferry terminal from which the historic Colombo–Madras (now Chennai) ferry service operated from 1914 until the civil conflict era made cross-strait travel impossible. The ferry service across the Palk Strait between Talaimannar and Rameswaram was the principal connection between Sri Lanka and India for generations — the route by which the vast majority of travellers, migrants, and pilgrims crossed between the two countries before air travel. The ruined pier — its concrete structures standing in the shallow water of the strait — is a poignant relic of severed connection, and the views from the pier ruins across the strait toward India (sometimes visible on the horizon) provide one of the most symbolically charged viewpoints in Sri Lanka.
