Overview
The waters off the Kalpitiya Peninsula are home to one of the largest and most reliably encountered dolphin populations in South Asia — pods of spinner dolphins numbering in the hundreds, and sometimes thousands, regularly gather just a few kilometres offshore. The spinner dolphin is famous for its acrobatic aerial behaviour — spinning on its axis as it leaps clear of the water — and watching a mega-pod of 500–1,000 dolphins performing synchronised leaps around the boat is genuinely one of the most spectacular natural encounters available in Sri Lanka. The dolphin watching season at Kalpitiya coincides broadly with the northeastern coast beach season (November–March), and numerous boat operators offer morning dolphin watching tours from the Kalpitiya jetty that consistently produce extraordinary wildlife encounters.
