Overview

Ravana Cave is a natural cave system in the cliff face above Ravana Falls, associated in Sri Lankan tradition with the demon king Ravana who is said to have concealed Seetha within the cave’s depths during her captivity in Lanka. The cave is a genuine geological formation accessible by a steep climbing route above the main waterfall, and it remains an active pilgrimage site on the Sri Lanka Ramayana Trail — visited by Hindu pilgrims from India and the South Asian diaspora as well as Buddhist devotees who maintain small shrines within its chambers. The cave itself is dark, cold, and atmospheric — an inner world of wet rock and ancient human association that rewards the effort of the difficult ascent. Hanuman footprints and other Ramayana-associated markings are pointed out by local guides within the cave chambers.
