Overview
Adisham is one of the most extraordinarily unexpected buildings in Sri Lanka — a Tudor-style English country house built in 1931 by British planter Sir Thomas Villiers, inspired by Leeds Castle in Kent, and perched at 1,820 metres above sea level above the town of Haputale. The bungalow combines the visual incongruity of a Somerset farmhouse transplanted to a Sri Lankan highland ridge with the genuine charm of its beautifully maintained gardens, original Edwardian interiors, and the peaceful atmosphere of the Benedictine monastery that has occupied the building since 1961. The monks of St. Benedict maintain Adisham as a retreat and residence, and visitors are welcome to explore the gardens, the exterior, and selected interior rooms. The jam, sauces, and cordials produced by the monastery from highland fruits and herbs are famous throughout Sri Lanka and make exceptional purchases.
