Overview
The Kalu Ganga — literally “Black River” — is one of Sri Lanka’s major rivers, rising in the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary in the central highlands and flowing approximately 129 kilometres westward through the Sabaragamuwa and Southern Provinces before entering the Indian Ocean at Kalutara. In its lower reaches, the river passes through a beautiful landscape of paddy fields, rubber plantations, cinnamon groves, and village gardens, eventually widening into a broad, mangrove-fringed estuary where the tidal influence creates a dynamic environment of brackish water, mudflats, and wetland vegetation. The river estuary at Kalutara is particularly rich in birdlife and supports populations of otters, monitor lizards, and numerous fish species. Boat trips along the lower Kalu Ganga reveal a traditional rural Sri Lanka of considerable beauty — ferry crossings, riverside temples, fishermen casting hand-thrown nets, and the green wall of the river’s margins passing at a peaceful pace.
