Udapalatha Rural Tea Estates

Overview

The Udapalatha area — the broad rural district west of Kandy encompassing the townships around Pilimathalawa, Peradeniya, and into the hills beyond — contains some of the most scenic and least-visited tea estate landscapes accessible from the Kandyan highlands. Unlike the commercially developed tea country of Nuwara Eliya or Haputale where organised tea tours are slick and somewhat predictable, the small-scale tea estates of Udapalatha maintain an older, more authentic character — family-managed gardens on terraced hillsides, elderly pluckers following rows in the morning mist, processing factories fragrant with fresh leaf, and estate bungalows half-hidden in the vegetation. A drive through the back roads of this district, stopping at small roadside tea shops where the brew is impossibly strong and served in thick glasses, reveals an agricultural landscape that has barely changed in a century. The area is also close to the 14th-century temple circuit of Gadaladeniya, Lankatilaka, and Embekke.
