Overview
Seema Malaka is one of Colombo’s most visually striking Buddhist temples, set on a series of floating platforms on Beira Lake. Designed by the legendary Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa and consecrated in 1978, the temple is a masterpiece of modernist tropical architecture that blends seamlessly with its aquatic surroundings. Three interconnected wooden and concrete platforms rest on the surface of Beira Lake, housing a series of golden Buddha statues, meditation halls, and sacred shrines adorned with carved animals and mythological figures. The approach over a narrow wooden bridge creates a sense of separation from the city that makes the temple feel like a spiritual island. At night, the temple is beautifully illuminated, casting warm golden reflections across the lake. Seema Malaka is an active temple of the Gangaramaya complex and a place of genuine daily worship and meditation, as well as one of Colombo’s most photographed architectural treasures.
