Overview

Talangama Wetlands is a remarkable urban birding destination situated in Talangama village, less than 15 kilometres from central Colombo. The area encompasses a series of interconnected rice paddies, marshes, and small reservoirs that collectively form one of the most productive birdwatching sites in the Western Province. Despite its proximity to the bustling capital, Talangama has recorded over 140 bird species — a figure that rivals many dedicated nature reserves. The wetland is particularly famous among birders for sightings of the Sri Lanka blue magpie, Sri Lanka grey hornbill, brown-capped babbler, and numerous waterbirds including purple herons, painted storks, and lesser whistling ducks. The surrounding agricultural landscape of rice paddies and village gardens adds layers of habitat that support an exceptional diversity of bird life. Early morning visits during the northeast monsoon (November–January) offer the greatest chance of seeing migratory species alongside resident endemics.
