Overview
Siyambalanduwa is a small town in the eastern Monaragala District that serves as a gateway to extensive dry zone forest stretching toward the Gal Oya and Lahugala wildlife systems. The forest zones around Siyambalanduwa form part of a larger ecological corridor of immense importance — through these forests, elephant herds move between Gal Oya and the southeastern protected areas in one of the most significant wildlife migrations accessible within the Monaragala District. The forest itself is typical dry zone mixed evergreen — lower canopy, thorny scrub understorey, and open glades where wildlife concentrates in the dry season. The area is known locally for occasional elephant encounters on the roads and for good dry zone birdwatching in the forest margins.
