Overview
The Kumana wetlands — centred around the Kumana Villu tidal inlet and associated mangrove and lagoon habitats within Kumana National Park — form one of the finest birdwatching wetland environments in the entire South Asian region. The Kumana Villu is the most productive zone: a permanent shallow lagoon fringed by mangroves and tall forest trees that support the extraordinary nesting colony active between May and July. Outside the nesting season, the wetlands host exceptional concentrations of resident herons, egrets, spoonbills, storks, and kingfishers alongside the migratory waders and ducks that arrive with the northeast monsoon. The diversity of habitats within the park — coastal lagoon, mangrove, freshwater villu, scrub jungle, and open ocean shore — creates a birdwatching environment of near-unparalleled richness on the eastern coast.
