Trincomalee (often called Trinco) is a city and major port in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. The city has one of the world’s finest natural harbours. Nilaveli Beach, north of the city, is considered one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful beaches. Pigeon Island National Park, a short boat ride from Nilaveli, offers world-class snorkelling. The Hindu temple of Koneswaram at Fort Frederick is one of the Pancha Ishwarams — the five sacred abodes of Shiva.
