Pigeon Island National Park

Overview

Pigeon Island National Park is Sri Lanka’s only designated marine national park open to the public — a pair of small islands 1 kilometre offshore from Nilaveli Beach, surrounded by one of the finest and most accessible shallow coral reef systems in the country. The islands take their name from the rock pigeon colony that nests on the larger island, and the park encompasses the fringing reef systems around both islands that harbour an exceptional diversity of hard and soft corals, reef fish, sea turtles, and blacktip reef sharks. The sharks — 1 to 1.5 metres, entirely docile toward snorkellers — are perhaps the most distinctive feature of the Pigeon Island experience, patrolling the sandy channels between coral heads in clear, shallow water just metres from the surface. The coral gardens are among the healthiest accessible reefs on Sri Lanka’s eastern coast.

Highlights

  • The rock pigeon colony nesting on the larger island
  • Very clear water — visibility frequently exceeding 15 metres
  • Only 1 km offshore — accessible by 10-minute boat from Nilaveli
  • Snorkelling accessible without dive certification — the reef is shallow
