Overview
Velgam Vehera — also known as Natanar Kovil in its Hindu incarnation — is an ancient sacred site approximately 20 kilometres south of Trincomalee that has served as both a Buddhist monastery and a Hindu temple at different periods in its very long history, reflecting the religious complexity of the Eastern Province’s cultural heritage. The site dates to at least the 3rd century BCE and contains significant Buddhist ruins including dagoba platforms, inscription stones, and bathing pond remains, as well as Hindu shrine structures that were established over the Buddhist foundations in the medieval period. The jungle setting of the site — surrounded by dry zone scrub that has reclaimed much of the original monastery complex — gives Velgam Vehera an atmosphere of genuine antiquity and natural enclosure that is deeply atmospheric.
