Sri Maha Bodhi Tree

Overview

The Sri Maha Bodhi is the most sacred tree on earth for Buddhists — a living fig tree (Ficus religiosa) grown from a cutting of the very tree under which Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment in Bodh Gaya, India, more than 2,300 years ago. Brought to Anuradhapura by Theri Sanghamitta, daughter of Emperor Ashoka, in approximately 288 BCE, it is the oldest historically authenticated tree in the world. The tree is enclosed within a golden-railed enclosure on a tiered platform within the sacred precinct of Anuradhapura, and it is a continuously active pilgrimage destination drawing thousands of devotees daily from across Sri Lanka and the world. White-clad pilgrims circle the golden railings, light oil lamps, make flower offerings, and sit in meditation below the canopy in a continuous stream of devotion that has not ceased for over two millennia. The spiritual atmosphere at the Sri Maha Bodhi is unlike any other place in Sri Lanka.
