Overview
Anawilundawa Bird Sanctuary is a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance and one of the finest birdwatching sites in the North Western Province — a complex of ancient irrigation tanks, marshes, and paddy land that creates a diverse wetland habitat supporting over 100 bird species. The sanctuary is particularly important for migratory birds from Eurasia that winter here from October to March, adding dozens of species to the impressive resident community. Painted storks, open-billed storks, black-headed ibis, various herons and egrets, and numerous species of kingfisher are reliably present throughout the year. The ancient tank system at the core of the sanctuary demonstrates the ecological value of Sri Lanka’s traditional hydraulic civilisation — tanks built 2,000 years ago for agriculture now function as internationally significant bird habitats.
