Overview
Kaludiya Pokuna is an ancient forest hermitage deep within the Knuckles Conservation Forest, associated with centuries of Buddhist meditation practice and featuring a remarkable ancient rock tank (pokuna) that gives the site its name — Kaludiya Pokuna meaning “dark water pool.” The site is believed to have been used as a forest monastery since at least the Anuradhapura period, and the ancient rock inscriptions, stone pathways, and carved meditation platforms that remain in the forest are evidence of a sophisticated monastic community that once thrived in this remote highland forest. The pool itself is a natural rock formation filled with dark, still water, surrounded by ancient trees whose canopy filters the light into a quality of extraordinary calm. The forest around the pool is a conservation zone of high biodiversity, with endemic birds, rare orchids, and the humid, lush atmosphere of undisturbed cloud forest. Reaching Kaludiya Pokuna requires a guided trek of several hours.
