Thabbowa Tank

Overview

Thabbowa Tank is a large ancient reservoir in the northern Puttalam District, one of the substantial tanks that formed part of the ancient hydraulic system of the Rajarata at its northwestern extent. The tank is an important wildlife resource — its water and the surrounding vegetation attract elephants from the adjacent Wilpattu forest, and the margins support excellent waterbird populations including painted storks, herons, and pelicans. The tank bund provides a scenic elevated view over the water, and the morning atmosphere — still water, mist, birds gathering, and the distant forest — is characteristic of the best ancient tank wildlife experiences. Thabbowa is accessible and makes an excellent complement to a Wilpattu safari by extending the wildlife experience into the broader landscape.
