Overview
Eluwankulama is a coastal forest section within the Wilpattu protected area complex, where the dry zone jungle of the interior transitions into coastal scrub and mangrove as it approaches the Indian Ocean shoreline. This ecological transition zone is one of the most biodiverse sections of the northwestern coastal ecosystem — the forest harbours leopards, elephants, and the full range of Wilpattu’s mammal population while the coastal margin provides habitat for sea turtles, seabirds, and specialist coastal species. The combination of dense interior jungle and coastal access makes Eluwankulama a uniquely complete ecological zone, and for visitors extending their Wilpattu safari to the coastal fringe, the experience of emerging from the dark jungle into the open coastal light is one of the park’s most distinctive moments.
