Overview
Arugam Bay on the eastern coast is globally famous as a surf destination, but the inland routes connecting the bay with the wildlife sanctuaries of the southeastern interior — Lahugala, Kumana, Pottuvil Lagoon, and the Monaragala District wilderness — form one of the most diverse single-day adventure itineraries available in Sri Lanka. The route from Arugam Bay inland through Lahugala, Pottuvil Lagoon, and toward the Kumana access roads passes through landscapes of extraordinary variety: the coastal lagoon of Pottuvil, the elephant-fed lake of Lahugala, the dry zone forest corridor of the eastern Monaragala District, and the coastal wilderness of the Kumana approach. These “safari link routes” have been developed informally by the Arugam Bay guesthouse and tuk-tuk community as day-trip circuits that connect the surf town to its remarkable wildlife hinterland.
