Overview
Lahugala Kitulana National Park and its surrounding wildlife corridor is one of the most important elephant habitats in Sri Lanka’s southeastern landscape — a small but critically positioned protected area that serves as a vital linkage between the Gal Oya, Kumana, and Yala wildlife systems. Lahugala’s elephant population is particularly notable: during the late afternoon and early evening hours, herds of elephants come to the Lahugala lake to feed on the beru grass (a type of water plant) that grows in the shallow margins, creating some of the most reliable and accessible wild elephant viewing in Sri Lanka. The lake environment also attracts painted storks, pelicans, lesser adjutants, and a rich waterbird community. Lahugala is compact enough to be fully visited in a half-day, making it an excellent addition to any Arugam Bay or Monaragala itinerary.
