Overview
Bar Reef Marine Sanctuary is the largest protected coral reef in Sri Lanka — a massive reef system extending approximately 160 square kilometres off the western coast of the Kalpitiya Peninsula, designated as a sanctuary to protect its extraordinary marine biodiversity. The reef supports a spectacular diversity of hard and soft corals, 400+ species of fish, sea turtles, sharks, rays, and other marine life in water of exceptional clarity. The sanctuary is entirely boat-accessible — reached by a 30–60 minute trip from the Kalpitiya jetty — and offers some of the finest diving and snorkelling in South Asia, with visibility regularly exceeding 15 metres. The complete absence of significant coastal development near Bar Reef has preserved the ecosystem in a condition of remarkable health, and the sanctuary’s international recognition reflects the global significance of what lies beneath these waters.
