Overview
Devinuwara Temple (also known as Dondra Dewale or Vishnu Devalaya) at Dondra, near the southernmost tip of Sri Lanka, is one of the most ancient and historically significant religious sites on the island — a temple to the god Vishnu (identified with Upulvan in Sri Lankan tradition) that has been a place of pilgrimage for over two thousand years. Historical chronicles describe the original Devinuwara temple as one of the greatest religious complexes in medieval Sri Lanka, with enormous wealth, elaborate festivals, and architectural grandeur that rivalled the greatest temples of the island. The Portuguese virtually destroyed the original complex in 1587 in one of the most devastating acts of colonial religious violence in Sri Lankan history. The current temple is a reconstruction, but it remains an important pilgrimage site and the annual Devinuwara Perahera is one of the most significant temple festivals in the Southern Province.
