Chilaw Lagoon

Overview

Chilaw Lagoon is the coastal lagoon at the mouth of the Deduru Oya river near Chilaw town, forming an important estuarine habitat where freshwater from the river meets the salt water of the Indian Ocean. The lagoon is the primary base for Chilaw’s fishing fleet — dozens of wooden fishing boats moored in the sheltered waters create a scene of traditional maritime activity that has changed little in decades. The lagoon margins support excellent waterbird populations, and the mangrove and reed bed edges are particularly rich in herons, kingfishers, and waders. A small boat can be hired for an informal lagoon trip, and the view from the bridge over the lagoon entrance takes in the full scene of boats, birds, and the open ocean horizon beyond.
