Overview
The Belihuloya River — formed from the mountain streams draining the southern slope of the Horton Plains plateau — flows through a spectacularly beautiful highland valley in the transition zone between the central highlands and the Sabaragamuwa foothills. The river is one of the clearest and coldest highland streams accessible in the southern province, its water descending rapidly from the Horton Plains elevation through a series of falls, pools, and rapids in a valley of exceptional natural beauty. The eco-lodges of the Belihuloya area are positioned specifically to access the river’s swimming pools and viewpoints, and the experience of bathing in the ice-cold highland water surrounded by the forest-covered ridges of the Samanala range is deeply refreshing. The river is also an excellent trout fishing stream and supports the endemic Belihuloya torrent toad in its cold, fast-flowing sections.
