Overview
Dutch Bay is the sheltered bay on the eastern side of the Kalpitiya Peninsula — a calm, shallow body of water between the peninsula and the mainland that provides the finest and most accessible kite surfing conditions in the Kalpitiya area during the wind season. The bay is named for the Dutch colonial presence at Kalpitiya, and the ruins of the Dutch Fort overlook its entrance. The protected water conditions make Dutch Bay ideal for beginner kite surfers and paddleboarders, and the flat, shallow lagoon allows for safe practice in conditions that are challenging enough to be interesting. The bay’s setting — calm water, the peninsula stretching north, the distant Puttalam Lagoon visible to the east — creates a landscape of considerable beauty and spatial freedom. Small guesthouses and kite surfing camps along the bay road provide accommodation of varying quality.
