Overview
The Galle Lighthouse stands at the southern tip of Galle Fort, perched on the Point Utrecht Bastion above the Indian Ocean — one of the most dramatically positioned lighthouses in South Asia. The current structure was built in 1938, replacing an earlier lighthouse that stood on the same spot, and it remains an active navigation aid for vessels approaching the southern coast. The lighthouse rises to approximately 26 metres and is painted in the distinctive black-and-white stripes that have made it one of Sri Lanka’s most photographed structures. The bastion on which it stands provides a sweeping 270-degree view of the ocean and the fort walls, and the combination of colonial masonry, crashing Indian Ocean waves, and the elegant lighthouse tower against a blue sky creates one of Sri Lanka’s most compelling coastal photographs. The lighthouse is generally viewed from the exterior and from the surrounding bastion — interior access for visitors is not available.
