Overview
Belilena Cave at Kitulgala is one of the most significant prehistoric archaeological sites in Sri Lanka and one of the most important in South Asia — a large natural cave that has yielded evidence of human occupation stretching back approximately 37,000 years. The cave is the type site of the Balangoda Culture — the prehistoric human population of Sri Lanka whose remains have been found at multiple sites including Batadomba Cave near Ratnapura. Excavations at Belilena have produced geometric microliths, food refuse (fish bones, shells, and animal bones), and skeletal material that together reveal the sophisticated hunter-gatherer society that occupied the Kelani valley for tens of thousands of years. The cave is a large, impressive natural limestone formation with chambers of considerable depth, and standing within it while contemplating the 37,000 years of human presence creates a uniquely powerful historical experience.
