Kitulgala Rainforest

Overview

The rainforest surrounding Kitulgala is a fragment of the wet zone lowland forest that once covered much of southwestern Sri Lanka — a secondary and partially primary forest of considerable biodiversity that sits at the ecological junction between the lowland wet zone and the highland forest of the Central Province. The Kitulgala forest is one of the finest accessible birdwatching sites near Colombo, with the Sri Lanka spurfowl, Ceylon hanging parrot, brown-capped babbler, and multiple endemic species reliably encountered in the forest sections above the Kelani River. The forest also supports endemic reptiles, including the rare Sri Lanka green pit viper, and an extraordinary variety of insects and amphibians. The experience of walking the Kitulgala forest — the sound of the river, the calls of endemic birds, and the density of tropical vegetation — is simultaneously the setting for adventure sports and a genuinely important natural ecosystem.
