Overview
Bellanwila Raja Maha Vihara is one of the most prominent Buddhist temples in the Colombo district, located in the suburb of Bellanwila, approximately 10 kilometres south of the city centre. The temple is believed to have ancient origins, with records suggesting it dates back to the era of King Dutugamunu in the 2nd century BCE. The current temple complex is impressively large and beautifully maintained, featuring a white stupa of significant size, a colourful shrine room with traditional paintings, and extensive grounds that create a serene atmosphere despite the busy residential area surrounding it. The temple is best known for its annual Bellanwila Esala Perahera, held in August, which is one of the largest and most spectacular temple festivals in the Western Province, featuring decorated elephants, traditional dancers, drummers, and torch bearers processing through the streets in an ancient tradition of royal pageantry. On Poya (full moon) days, thousands of worshippers come to make offerings and seek merit.
