Overview
Elephant Pass is a narrow isthmus connecting the Jaffna Peninsula to the Sri Lanka mainland, bisected by a lagoon and historically one of the most strategically important and bitterly contested geographical features of the civil conflict. The name derives from the historical practice of elephants crossing the shallow lagoon at this point on the ancient trade route between the north and south. The Elephant Pass Lagoon — now peaceful and ecologically interesting — was the site of multiple major military engagements during the conflict era, and the military installations and fortifications that dot the lagoon margin are still visible as reminders of those years. The lagoon itself is now recovering ecologically and provides productive birdwatching.
