Overview
The Bellanwila-Attidiya Sanctuary is a protected wetland south of Colombo — a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance encompassing approximately 400 hectares of freshwater marsh, reed beds, and wooded patches in the southern suburbs of the city. The sanctuary is one of the most significant urban wetland bird habitats in Sri Lanka, with over 100 species recorded including large numbers of purple herons, painted storks, little cormorants, and the endemic Sri Lanka grey hornbill. The wetland is visible from the road but best explored from its internal paths, and the combination of the managed sanctuary with the rich urban biodiversity it supports makes it an essential natural site for any Colombo-based birdwatcher.
