Overview
The dry zone forest trails of the Northern Province — accessible from the road network between Vavuniya and Kilinochchi — pass through a forest type characteristic of the northern interior: low-canopy mixed deciduous dry zone forest with thorn scrub understorey, large termite mounds, and the distinctive dry zone birds and mammals of the northern landscape. The trails are informal and largely unknown to tourism, and exploring them with a local guide who knows the forest ecology and wildlife provides an experience of the northern dry zone wilderness in an essentially natural state. The forests here are recovering from conflict-era disruption and the wildlife populations are rebuilding.
