Balapitiya Madu River Safari

June 14, 2026 claymatics.web@gmail.com Bentota Area

Overview

The Madu River Safari at Balapitiya is widely considered one of the finest river and mangrove boat experiences in Sri Lanka, rivalling even the better-known Bentota River for the richness and diversity of its wildlife and the drama of its mangrove tunnels. The Madu River Lagoon (Maduganga) is a UNESCO-designated wetland of international importance, covering 915 hectares and encompassing 64 islands of varying size, 11 of which are inhabited by communities who have lived among the mangroves for generations. The boat journey winds through cathedral-like mangrove tunnels, past isolated island temples, through fish farms, and into open water expanses where birds gather in impressive numbers. Ancient Buddhist temples on small islands add a spiritual dimension to the journey. The biodiversity of Maduganga is exceptional — over 200 plant species, 114 bird species, 39 fish species, and numerous reptiles and amphibians have been recorded within the lagoon system.
